    When a river literally catches fire, you know you have a problem. The Cuyahoga river was less a body of water than a thick, toxic, oily gloop filled with junk that slowly oozed its way into Lake Eyrie. Warmed by the outflow from power stations, it was incapable of supporting life and poisoned everything it touched. It caught fire in 1969. Again.

    Investigations into the fire led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA was intended to clear up the mess that humans had left behind, while at the same time preventing this sort of thing from happening again. Such an agency is always going to be attacked from both sides, but it is undeniable that it has fulfilled its remit.

    Undeniable that is, except to a clutch of fanatics who deny reality. The EPA has been attacked by DOGE, as with everything else. The scale and extent of the destruction is the same as elsewhere. It is essentially being reduced to a placeholder agency, presumably to fulfill statutory requirements, but without any power or ability to do anything.

    This is the most frustrating thing about the new order. It’s as if they are looking at every mistake that humans have made in the last hundred years and they are determined to repeat them. And they do it with such enthusiasm. They have absolutely no understanding of how the world works or why. And these are the people who are in charge.

  • The worst idea ever

    Why are they all such massive racists?

    Racism is not a law of nature – it’s a human invention. It has its origins at the start of the 16th century, at a time of the Reformation and the discovery of the New World. People were trying to make sense of a world that had suddenly changed. Racism seemed to offer answers to their questions. Trouble was, all the answers are wrong.

    It has been challenged from time to time by people looking for some sort of evidence or basis to its claims. It always fails these challenges and then mutates into a new form that is immune from the last challenge.

    The most recent setback was the shoah, which most people – though evidently not all – consider a very bad idea. That’s by no means its only crime. Racism has a solid record of persecution, oppression, extortion, torture, rape, murder, war and genocide. It has no predictive power for anything and has zero virtues.

    It’s been a popular mass delusion for centuries and has drenched our culture with its poison. It’s so well established that we grasp for racist tools such as affirmative action as part of our attempts to undo some of the mess. Like everything else racist, these are also useless.

    The entire leadership of the USA believes unquestioningly, reflexively, in this baseless garbage. It dominates their thinking and decisions. And it’s total bullshit.

  • Not a treaty organisation

    International women’s day today, great, I did the washing. Nice and sunny, gets it dried lovely.

    I find myself thinking what a good thing it is that I don’t have to rely on the USA for sunlight and fresh air. It’s a different matter with defence.

    The Leader of the Free World announced that he will not defend his allies if they are attacked by an enemy.

    To me, this rather goes against the spirit of an alliance. More to the point, it goes directly against what is written in the treaty, but then when did a fraudster ever respect a contract?

    Not that any of this comes as a shock anymore. What is their strategy? Why are they deliberately driving us away?

    In the next few years we will be saying, yankees go home, and that’s assuming they don’t slink away in shame by themselves first. With that the USA loses the ability to threaten Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Either they know this and don’t care, or they don’t know.

    At the same time they have prodded the EU into massive rearmament. At the end of this the EU, as an independent actor, will do as it pleases in the world and will never ask USAian permission first. This will happen. Do they realise?

    They are throwing away their power and I don’t understand why.
